A Literary Feast

On 22 November the whole of Year 5 and 6 were privileged to meet award winning author Linda Newbery at the Adderbury Literacy Festival. Linda writes for all age groups and many of the children are aware of her books through their independent reading or by hearing novels read in class. It was a rare opportunity to hear directly about an author’s experiences of writing and getting published and Linda spoke to the children about some of the people and places in her life which have influenced her stories. When the floor was opened to questions, Linda was greeted by a sea of hands showing how fascinated the children were in what she was sharing with them.

Many took the opportunity of buying one of her books at the event and were rewarded by getting them signed by the author herself who took time to speak to every child despite the very long queue! If was a fantastic experience allowing the children to make the link between the books they read, the writing process and the person behind the text. Many potential authors in the crowd were greatly inspired that day.
