Homework
Home Reading/Reading Books
We would encourage you to support your child with reading at home at least 3 times a week for 10 minutes. This provides such a good foundation for all learning and will really help your child’s progress. When your child has read to you, please make a note of the date and page number read to, as well as any additional comments you may have, in your child’s reading diary.
Year 1 children will be given a RWI book which will be changed weekly, if they have read it with an adult twice. They may also have words to practise reading quickly-Speedy reading.
Year 2 children’s books will be changed twice a week (on set days) if they have been read with an adult.
In Year 2 we use the Big Cat scheme of books. This scheme includes non-fiction texts and a wider range of fiction genres as well as poetry. The Big Cat books are excellent for prompting discussion and for introducing your child to new vocabulary. Should your child finish their book before the set changing day, we would encourage them to read their book again as this helps to build fluency as well as confidence. At the back of the Big Cat books there are also ideas for activities based on the book should you wish to have a go.
