Young Sports Leaders
The Young Sports Leader Award is a programme of leadership training for young people between the ages of 9 and 13 that promotes and supports them working with younger children, teaching leadership skills through a whole range of games and activities. The Award focuses on specific skills such as giving instructions, the organisation of people and equipment and the use of space; whilst doing this through a practical approach to teaching. This project aims to empower our young people, by encouraging them to take responsibility and develop leadership skills. It will encourage cooperation and the development of moral and social skills, whilst promoting integration, with the opportunity for older children to work with younger children.
Following the completion of this qualification, at MCPA the children take part in our sports leader's programme in school, in which they plan, deliver and evaluate sessions on a weekly basis to key stage one pupils. Their goal is to increase the amount of time in which our children are being physically active. Observations are completed over the course of the year, and regular feedback is provided by teachers in areas such as demonstration, health and safety, and engagement to assist with their progression.
Year on year it is incredible to see the level of responsibility our young sports leaders take in ensuring their sessions are the best they can be and as exciting as possible for the children that attend. The programme is a platform for growth in confidence and professionalism - creating the building blocks for future success.
