Modern Foreign Languages
The learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for the pupils. Pupils develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. Learning another language raises awareness of the multilingual and multicultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others.
At MCPA children are taught French lessons from Year 3 upwards. French is taught with an emphasis on practical and interactive activities to enable children to develop the confidence and skills to speak the language. Activities are designed to help the children acquire new vocabulary and develop accurate pronunciation. The children enjoy learning French through songs, stories and games. As they become more proficient and confident, children are given opportunities to read and write French, as well as use a bilingual dictionary. In Key Stage1, children are informally introduced to French greetings and classroom instructions.
