Maths

Our vision is for every child to enjoy and succeed in mathematics, regardless of background. We use the Maths Mastery teaching approach which helps pupils to develop a deep and secure knowledge and understanding of mathematics at each stage of their learning. By the end of every school year or Key Stage, our aim is for pupils to have acquired mastery of the mathematical facts and concepts they’ve been exposed to, equipping them to move on confidently and securely to more advanced material. At MCPA we use the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach to expose the structure behind the abstract concepts taught, allowing children to gain a more secure understanding of the skills and knowledge. Learning and activities are differentiated so that all children are challenged appropriately for their level.
We aim to ensure that all pupils:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
- Can reason mathematically by conjecturing, justifying and proving using mathematical language
- Can solve problems by applying their mathematical skills and knowledge to a range of contextual problems
In lessons, pupils are given opportunities to:
- Revise and consolidate previous learning through Flashback 4s and ‘Can you still..?’ activities
- Use concrete apparatus and pictorial representations to develop their understanding as well as help them to demonstrate and articulate their mathematical thinking
- Use stem sentences to develop their ability to use mathematical language correctly, as well as the understanding of concepts
- Engage in ‘maths talk’, explaining and justifying their ideas – why as well as how or what
- Complete a mixture of fluency, reasoning and problem solving tasks
- Apply their knowledge and skills within a mathematical concept to varied contexts, tasks and activities to ensure a secure understanding of the mathematical concept
